Title
Concept of Dictatorships
Goals and Objectives
Students will be able to identify and summarize the characteristics of a dictatorship. Students will read and analyze selected reading and create a poster board explaining characteristics and giving examples of the dictatorships of Russia, Germany, and Italy during World War II.
California State Content Standards
10.8 Students analyze the causes and consequences of World War II.
- Describe the political, diplomatic, and military leaders during the war (e.g., Winston Churchill, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Emperor Hirohito, Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower).
- Analyze the Nazi policy of pursuing racial purity, especially against the European Jews; its transformation into the Final Solution; and the Holocaust that resulted in the murder of six million Jewish civilians.
Lesson Introduction (Anticipatory Set)
The word dictatorship and the dictionary definition will be written on the board; upon entering the class the students will be directed to read and copy down the definition into their notebook. Students will then be given a scenario: (Digital Projector) You ask your mom/dad/guardian/person in charge etc… if it is okay to go see the new movie “Total Destruction 3”. You ask nicely but get no as the answer. You then ask why you can’t see the movie and in return are told “Because I said so”. A mildly heated parent/child argument follows and you storm off fuming.
Students will then answer: In your opinion and point of view, is this an example of a dictatorship? Why or why not?
Hold short discussion about the students’ answers and what a dictatorship is.
Discuss the characteristics of a dictatorship (6).
1. One party, one leader, one program
2. Absence of individual liberty (censorship)
3. National Glorification
4. Glorification of War
5. Totalitarian State
6. Racialism

Content Delivery (Lecture, Inquiry, Reading, Discussion and Debate, Concept Formation, Simulation, Problem-Based Learning)
Students will be partnered together and directed to read through selected sections of the textbook and then will fill out and complete the Concept Characteristic Chart on Dictatorship. Inform students to use the chart to analyze and record information about each example. Students will be given the remainder of the period to complete the reading and chart.

Student Engagement & Critical Thinking (Student Activities)
Students will be required to read, analyze, and critique specific sections of the textbook closely associated with the concept of a dictatorship (Russia, Germany, and Italy) during World War II. Using the information from the textbook, students will complete the Concept Characteristic Chart. Students will then be asked (on the back of the chart) to note/write down noticed differences and similarities between all 4 examples.
Demonstrated Learning (Formative & Summative Assessments)
Students will create a small poster board showcasing the dictatorship characteristics of either Russia/Stalin, Germany/Hitler, or Italy/Mussolini during World War II. Students will be provided with one poster board and a handout with instructions and grading criteria on it (rubric).
Lesson Closure
Students will fill out exit cards summarizing the characteristics of a dictatorship and at least 3 examples of why Russia, Germany, or Italy were labeled as dictatorships during World War II. Ask students, keeping in mind what they just learned, would they change their answer to the introductory question? Is the movie scenario still in an example of a dictatorship or is it still not?
